Tuesday, July 18th at Montgomery County Community College, over 100 people came out to attend a Town Hall hosted by the Montgomery County Democratic Committee, the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals and the Healthcare Defenders Coalition. The event had a panel of four including the Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, Dr. Val Arkoosh; State Representative Pamela DeLissio; Patrick Keenan, the Director of Policy and Consumer Standards at the Pennsylvania Health Access Network; and Dawn Walker, a mental health nurse in PASNAP.

The event kicked off with each speaker briefly discussing their input in the current state and national debate on healthcare before delving into the audiences stories and questions. Many audience members shared stories about the good that government programs like Medicaid and Medicare had done for them and posed questions about the future of healthcare to the panel. A big topic of discussion was the embattled Affordable Care Act and whether Single-Payer Healthcare is possible in the United States.

The Town Hall reinforced the fact that more activism is needed in order to protect the healthcare we already have fought so hard for. But it also showed that even more so to push to stabilize and improve healthcare in the future. Many questions were asked about how to get involved and even more people replied with ways to get involved and make sure people’s voices are heard as government at the state and national level make decisions on the health of the nation’s citizens.
